Green Spotting : What to do in SF for St. Patricks Day?

Posted by Domitille Montoro on Tue, Mar 12, 2013 @ 04:24 PM

StpattysdayA

This coming week-end San Francisco will be celebrating Saint Patrick's Day with a wide variety of events and parties.

The Irish Spirit is visiting us: get ready for lots of green, lots of beer and lots of fun.

As it is well known Patrick is the Saint patron of Ireland, what you might not know is that he has been celebrated in Europe as early as the 9th and 10th century on March 17th. This day was made an official feast day in the 17th century, which meant  you could break any lent rules you have and feast. At the beginning Saint Patrick’s day was a commemoration of the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.  Originally a religious celebration it as become a secular celebration and an essential part of Irish culture.

Even though St Patrick's Day is not a legal Holiday in the United States, it is widely celebrated across the country and of course San Francisco has a lot to offer on this week-end, here is a selection of what the city has in store for you:

Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

What would be a festival without a joyful parade? This year the parade is scheduled on Saturday, March 16th, a day before Saint Patrick’s Day.

Rain or shine it will start at 11:30 am, the parade route will begin at 2nd and Market and go all the way to Civic Center Plaza, next to the City Hall.

Proudly marching up Market Street will be numbers of groups from the Irish community; schools, cultural groups and of course the Police and Fire department of San Francisco.

This event is free to attend.

Saint Patrick’s Day Irish Festival

If you want to learn a little more about Ireland’s history and enjoy some traditional Irish music and dancing, this is the place.

The Festival will take place at the Joe Allioto Performing Art Plaza (south-east of the City Hall) from 11am to 5pm. Of course you are more than welcome to have a beer and try some Irish food while enjoying the moment. There will be exhibits for the whole family to enjoy, do not hesitate to go with the little ones. This year the festival will honor the Celtic women, one of them, this year’s Grand Marshall: Joanne Hayes-White; SFFD Chief. If you want to avoid crowds, going in the morning is probably a safer option as more and more people are expected to come to celebrate as the day goes by.

This event is free to attend.

Saint Patty’s Day Pub Crawl

A Saint Patrick’s day celebration would not be complete without a little bar hoping, so for those more interested in beer tasting than in leprechaun hunting, get a ticket for the 3 Day Pub Crawl. They have events planned for you on the 15th, 16th and 17th of March. You can choose to only attend one day, or for the bravest get the full 3 day pass. Last year the event gathered more than 3000 people so there are a lot of chances that you will make friends and good memories.

3 simple rules: wear green, be 21+ to participate and Do Not Drive. If you are staying with us get in touch with our concierges, they will be more than happy to arrange transportation with our town car company, Delovely Limo.

Pricing Varies.

For those who just want a Beer

Of course Pub Crawling is not the only option out there, if you want to keep it simple, why not take a quick walk from any of our hotels and have a beer at John Foley’s Irish Pub, located steps from Hotel Diva, Kensington Park and Hotel Union Square at 243 O'Farell St.

For those who just want to see Green

If you're not a beer fan and dont like large crowds, but still want to feel the green vibe, check out our Perrier Lounge at Hotel Diva.

We wish you a lot of fun and as the Irish would say “Bíodh deireadh seachtaine maith”*.

*Have a good week-end.

The Serenity of San Francisco

Posted by Roohie Naseer on Tue, Feb 19, 2013 @ 10:21 AM

I often find when people come to San Francisco they already know about all the touristy spots. But many like to also go to those secret and hidden spots with less bustle a city usually has. For our special guests, I have the perfect guide to experience all aspects of the city. This past week, I ventured to a few of my favorite places in San Francisco for some rejuvenation and relaxation. These places are unique in their own little ways. They are places I go to when I want to just getaway.

One of my favorite places is Lands End Trail, which is an amazing spot to takes hikes. It’s a mesmerizing hiking space with views of the water, the bridge, and cliffs. All surrounded by fresh ocean air and leaf love. Living in such a busy city, this trail is a great way to clear the mind and find PEACE.

The next best activity for me to do in the city is simply taking a walk and grabbing a Kara's cupcakes in the Marina. Traffic in San Francisco can be torturous. We’ve been give these legs, now lets make use of it! On a gorgeous spring day such as the few we have been having, vitamin D always does the body good. Kara’s is my favorite cupcake shop with gluten-free decadent cupcakes! The caramel sea-salt is divine.

While personal time is always a joy, I do love my family! This past weekend, my family and I explored a new brunch place called Starbelly in the Castro. FRESH, ingredients with delicious flavor, everything from their fish tacos to their pizzas, or 9-grain cereal with house made walnut milk.

Whenever I am in Union Square I am sure to stop on the 3rd floor at Macy's into Tout Sweet. I picked up some pretty painted Macaroons from there as well. They even have Vegan Green energy bars that go perfectly with a cup of tea.

Where to watch Super Bowl 2013

Posted by Roohie Naseer on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 @ 04:09 PM

                       super bowl 2013 resized 600

Sunday February 3rd our very own San Francisco 49ers will be taking on the Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans for the Super Bowl championships. If we win, we will become the fifth city in history to take home World Series and Super Bowl championships in the same season, and prove that San Francisco really is the best city on earth.

While it is fun to sit at home on your comfortable couch and watch the game… Nothing will compare to the streets of San Francisco where fans, enthusiasts and fanatics will be rushing with adrenaline. The bars will be crazy, the streets will be full of insanity and in order to avoid the World Series like riot, the screening at Civic Center is closed.

The question then remains: Where to watch the game in SF!?

Urban Tavern is a chic bar located in Union Square. On Super Bowl Sunday they will be having special cocktails between 11:30 AM to 10:30 PM on of which is similar to the Harlequin Fizz.

The Bus Stop, on 1901 Union Street, is an iconic sports bar that has been serving thirsty local sports fans for over 100 years. Looking to let out your frustration and show your 49ers pride, this is the place to go. You are sure to find fans bleeding in pride so Raven fans, enter with caution.

Beach Chalet is offering half-price appetizers and brews, plus special bar bites. Whether you sit inside at the bar, or in the back room with gorgeous views of Golden Gate Park, the Chalet will have your favorite brews on tap. Typically it's not a sports bar, but we're pretty sure that on Sunday it will be one.

Ace’s Bar is going to be open from 6AM with free BBQ on Sunday for all! With flat screens, sofas and lounging everywhere. Petes Tavern on the other hand will remind you of your college days. A comparatively classy frat house turned into a huge bar filled with enthusiastic alumni and friendly locals.

We have you set on where to watch the game but don’t forget to gear yourself up in 49ers apparel! Even if you aren’t a die hard football fan, you need to represent SF! All over Union Square, Embarcadero and Financial District there are street stands of jerseys, hates, tattoos - you name it. Grab one on the go and enjoy the game. Niners are for sure bringing it home. Lets go Niners2013!

San Francisco's Divine Gift

Posted by Angelique Rivas-Day on Wed, Jan 02, 2013 @ 03:08 PM

Sometimes I wonder if chocolate has magical capabilities, if it is a potion that can cure all ills, a tonic to heal all broken hearts, or a remedy to make the bitter days a little sweeter. Twenty five hundred years ago in the Mayan civilization, chocolate was thought to be a divine gift; isn’t that a lovely sentiment? I dare say that chocolate is not treated with half the respect as it once was!

When first moving to San Francisco I searched in vain for a place where I could indulge my chocolate fantasies while staying within the limits of my vegan diet. For those out there who scoff at the thought of vegan confections, let me tell you, it can be done and done well. And when it is, it is positively delightful! After much research (which left me in a chocolate coma) I have been able to put together my favorite vegan treats in San Francisco.

On days when one would like something chocolatey and fluffy I would recommend Pebbles Donuts, located in the San Francisco Ferry Building. These are a must for all donut lovers, the batter is made fresh daily and has the added ingredient of care for the body and planet. My favorite is the Mexican hot chocolate donut, each bite makes me positively weak at the knees, soft and delicious and did I mention 100% organic? These donuts will be appreciated by any true chocolate lover whether they are a vegan not. The more I searched in San Francisco the more I was charmed to find vegan chocolatey treasures around every corner. Just a few doors down from the Kensington Park Hotel in Union Square, is a lovely café called La Taza. I went in expecting to get a latte and to my surprise discovered that they made vegan cookies! I chose a chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips, it is quite possible that that was the highlight of my day, the cookie was chewy and rich something that is difficult to achieve in vegan baked goods. And on the occasion that one is looking for a more upscale vegan experience the place to go would be Millennium, an entirely vegan restaurant located on Geary Street. You can go for the entrée but make sure you stay for dessert! From their bourbon and black salt molten chocolate cake to their chocolate almond midnight, the desserts will remind you of the first time you fell in love with chocolate and make you forget that what you are eating is vegan.

San Francisco is home to my new favorite chocolate treats that have confirmed that chocolate truly is a divine gift!

Sexy in SF Recap!

                                describe the image

We are not your atypical hotel in San Francisco and far from conventional, so naturally, our events aren’t either. This past Wednesday the 12th, Hotel Diva teamed up with Minna Life to bring “Sexy in SF”. Inspired by the century old concept of a bachelorette party, without the excuse of a bride to be, Sexy in SF was a night full of fun with lingerie shopping, cocktails, and burlesque dancers!

Good Vibrations' sexologist, Carol Queen, taught many how to express their inner diva while others touched base with their inner goddess. Local brands such as St. Germain showcased zealous sweet liqueur for tasting. While PinkBerry and Cako brought beams to those with sweet tooth’s.

Oh and we cannot forget the Red Hot Burlesque dancers who put together a performance that made everyone hoot and holler all night long. With La Trappe Beer and Wine by Gary Finch quenched all the men’s taste buds and Lashfully beautifying all the ravishing ladies there was a place for everyone! Along with eyelash extensions ladies had the opportunity to receive free sample products from Melvita – French organic make up products.

Boudoir by Lily offered free photo sessions with sensual masks, and disguises with instant printed copies. Next door to Boudir was Pink Bunny with various accessories and toys on display to purchase. BossaNova brought delicious Brasilian outdoor barbequing, together with Little Black Dress Vodka, spiced up the aroma with flavorful, low-calorie cocktail drinks for all. Dozens of rhinestone-studded blindfolds exhibited on white duvets by were a hit!

This was a night where we all danced the night away and made some wonderful memories! Sexy in SF was a night full of sophisticated entertainment, fun and company for all.  Maybe we should make this a annual tradtion?
