San Francisco Holiday Cocktails For Every Personality

Posted by Danika Garlotta on Fri, Dec 20, 2013 @ 10:04 AM

Feeling merry, spending money, eating food, drinking cocktails: kind of expected during the holidays... but drinking really good cocktails, adds another level of festivity. Here's your guide to the best places to get a good, well crafted cocktail. Sorry vodka red bull lovers, this guide might not be for you.

Gitanedrink

1. Tradition

Private confessionals? Check. Church Pews? Check. Craft cocktails? Check. Welcome to Tradition, where the atmosphere is regal and the cocktails are traditional with a twist.

Our fav is the Sazerac. Many places say they can make this, and most can't. Cognac, Rye Whisky, sugar, Angostora & Peychard bitters with a touch of absinthe.

2. Gitane

If it's hidden in an alley then it must be special. This unknown little gem is a mix of sexy playfulness and modern swagger.

Must try cocktail:  Curandero - La Vida Mezcal, Blood Orange, dash of absinthe

3. Rye

Think of Rye's version of the Hot Toddy (the Hot Ta-dah) as Christmas in a châteaux, by a warm fireplace overlooking the Swiss Alps. It's that magical.

Must Try cocktail: The Hot Ta-dah - obviously.
Wild turkey Rye, Averna, ginger syrup, Angostora bitters nutmeg, lemon and a sprig of rosemary.

4. 15 Romolo

Just a short walk from Union Square and located up an alley (we like these types of places) is where you can the one and only Santa Suckerpunch.

Old grand-dad bonded bourbon, aperol, pedro ximenez sherry, lemon, bitters.

Psst... they also have a burger with Peanut Butter - It's Ahh-mazing!

5. Jaspers

Negronis on tap? Yes please.
Located in the Tenderloin, Jaspers has Negronis on tap and really what more do you need to know?

A Speakeasy Affair in the Penthouse at Hotel Union Square

Posted by Danika Garlotta on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 @ 12:31 PM

speakeasyblog

On March 14th we decided to have a swanky Speakeasy Affair at the Penthouse in Hotel Union Square. It was absolutely fabulous! We dressed in your typical speakeasy party attire – boas and all, and partnered with the masterminds behind the iconic Gold Dust and Lefty O’douls of San Francisco.

Those who were lucky enough to be invited were greeted by a walkway of candles leading up the Hotel Union Square Penthouse and served classic speakeasy cocktails such as The Bronx, Diamond Hitch and the Stinger. Yummy appetizers were served throughout the night and every moment was captured in our dress up area where people could get in the mood with hats, mustaches and boas.

One thing that our hotel group is known for is the canny ability to throw a good party – afterall we are PERSONALITY hotels!

WE'RE BRINGING OLD SCHOOL BACK

Posted by Danika Garlotta on Tue, Feb 28, 2012 @ 02:46 PM

blogRolodex

In this world of business, cards seem to be a stamp of approval, something that personally identifies you.  Come on, you know you have an over abundance of random business cards hiding in your desk drawer, your fancy business card holder or scattered all over your desk. Don’t you wish you had a cool device that could store all these cards in that you might one day need?

Strolling through the corporate halls of Personality Hotels, we couldn’t help notice that a few people are bringing cool back with ROLODEX’s!!! Yup, that bulky thing that sits on your desk and rotates.

You have to ask yourself what ever happened to the Rolodex in the first place? There hasn’t been some amazing new replacement? Everyone still has business cards, so what happened? What went wrong?

It doesn’t matter because either way, Personality Hotels is bringing the iconic office staple back to being cool.

Ok so maybe only two people are bringing old school back but that doesn’t matter because give us a couple week and guaranteed more people will have these fabulous contraptions sitting on their desks…once again.

I dare you to come up with a better idea, because it simply doesn’t exist.

When Personality Hotels partnered up with Let It Ride Design, it was a big deal. When a hip boutique hotel group got together with a very creative design team, ideas flowed and things happened! Afterall it takes a pretty brave group to stand in their undies and work with Personality Hotels! That's how we knew it was a great match.

Here is a lovely insert from the LET IT RIDE DESIGN team, that they wrote about us on their blog.

Personality Hotel Collection boasts incredible sophisticated boutique rooms, with custom one of a kind design, charm and accomodations and they have created FOUR distinct, boutique, incredible hotel properties in San Francisco. One visit to any of their spectacular properties ( Hotel Diva, Hotel Union Square, Kensington Park Hotel, The Steinhart ), and you inhale a true essence of San Francisco and the love these people have for the city in every room.

We here at Let It Ride Design are pleased to work with such creative and innovative people, and are proud to collaborate with such free thinking like minded individuals! Here are just a few of the projects we’ve worked on, in the last month for Personality Hotels. With more in the works currently, so keep checking back to see the goods!  You can get your hands on most of these limited edition items at corresponding Personality Hotel locations!

Here are a few of our projects:

Inspired by the countless thrift, thread, and vintage shops that abound in San Francisco, these nifty totes are a nod to the generations of folks with “Personality” that made the city of San Francisco the wonderful place it remains today.

Let It Ride Design designs and prints custom business cards, postcards, flyers, or pretty much anything you can dream of on any surface, …this is just some one examples of something we did for our friends at Personality Hotels.

Thank you Let it Ride for taking the time to write this! Cheers!

FUN FACTS ABOUT LEAP YEAR

Posted by Danika Garlotta on Tue, Feb 07, 2012 @ 09:34 AM

leapyear

2012 is a leap year, with 366 days instead of the usual 365 days. Here are some fun things you may not have known about this special year.

Why Do We Have Leap Years?
It was the ancient Egyptians who first figured out that the solar year and the man-made calendar year didn’t always match up. That’s because it actually takes the Earth a little longer than a year to travel around the Sun — 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds, to be exact. Therefore, as the hours accumulated over the centuries, an extra day was occasionally added to the calendar and over time, the practice became more or less official.

The Romans first designated February 29 as leap day, but a more precise formula (still in use today) was adopted in the 16th century when the Gregorian calendar fine-tuned the calculations to include a leap day in years only divisible by four - 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024, etc.

Another stipulation ruled that no year divisible by 100 would have a leap year, except if it was divisible by 400. Thus, 1900 was not a leap year...but 2000 was!

Leap Year cocktail recipe
Invented at the Savoy Hotel in London on February 29, 1928 the Leap Year Cocktail was said to have spurred many a marriage proposal.

2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
1/4 ounce fresh lemon juice

Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Serve with a twist of lemon.

Famous People Born on February 29
1976 - Ja Rule, rapper
1972 - Antonio Sabato Jr., model & actor
1916 - Dinah Shore, singer
1904 - Jimmy Dorsey, bandleader
1792 - Gioacchino Rossini, Italian opera composer

Leap Day Tradition - No Man is Safe!
The tradition of women romantically pursuing men in leap years began in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about the fairer sex having to wait for men to propose. Patrick finally relented and set February 29 aside as the day women were allowed the right to ask for a man’s hand in marriage.

The tradition continued in Scotland, when Queen Margaret declared in 1288 that on February 29 a woman had the right to pop the question to any man she fancied. Menfolk who refused were faced with a fine in the form of a kiss, a silk dress, or a pair of gloves given to the rejected lady fair.

Leap Year on Stage and Screen
Leap Day plays a pivotal role in the fictional The Pirates of Penzance, the most famous Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera that was translated to Broadway and the silver screen.

In the story, the hero Frederic realizes his apprenticeship binds him until his 21st birthday, but since his birthday falls on February 29, it means that technically he is only a young lad and won’t reach his 21st birthday until he is in his eighties!

A Leap Year Poem
Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November;
All the rest have thirty-one
Save February, she alone
Hath eight days and a score
Til leap year gives her one day more

Gina Lollobrigida ordering Rice Krispies in Italian & calling them “A Snap, Crackle & Poppa!” Having a lady call me up & scream at me that the package I created called: “Fatal Attraction” was so wrong  because I was encouraging extra marital affairs. HELLO!
